Egan's digs

It's been a while since I've given a peek into Egan's room, so today Egan asked me to show off his room for everyone to see.
Before I share the pictures, here is a quick flashback to Egan's room before he was born, and here are the first pictures from Egan's new room on the day we bought our new house.
Ready to see what it looks like now?
On a normal day, it looks like this...

Take a second look. Can you spot Egan?
Today, he helped me clean it up so that it now looks more like this...

See all his toys and books neatly put in his basket?
(and yes, that is a camping chair covered with a blanket. I wanted a chair for Egan's room, but didn't want to spend money on it. I think it works.)
Here are a few more pictures of Egan's room. Look quickly as it won't stay like this for long.

I'm in the process of painting birch trees on Egan's wall. It has been on my list of projects for a while. Ah, someday soon I hope to finish.

Egan's awesome shelves and framed Ansel Adams pictures there by the door.

His dresser, brown and silver owl, and yes, even an inflatable moose head. (Thanks dad!)

So, that's Egan's room. Still a work in progress, but slowly coming together!

family outing

The cuteness? Yeah, he gets that from his mom...

Wait, who am I kidding? He looks too much like his dad for me to claim that.

We had a fun family day at the arboretum on friday. It was beautiful! We packed a picnic and spent the afternoon there strolling around... and taking some pictures... (duh!)
I asked for a membership to the arboretum for Christmas from my parents and I couldn't be more excited about it. They have so many fun things for kids and it is the most picturesque place I know. So fun! You can know we will be visiting often, and even more sure you will like the pictures coming out of there. I'm looking forward to spring!

So, yes, incase you were wondering, it is January here, and yes, I had my son out in only a t-shirt. Can you believe it was in the 70s on Friday? Egan was a great sport and was happy to show off his awesome crawling skills. You won't see any pictures of him in the grass here because he WAS NOT A FAN OF THE GRASS. At all. He looked like a cat walking in peanut butter (thank you for that, Blake), or maybe more like Bo walking in snow. Wait, Bo refuses to walk in snow, so maybe more like what Bo would look like if he were to walk in the snow. It was funny none-the-less.
Since the grass wasn't his favorite, we moved to the park bench so he could show off his one handed standing skills.

Not too shabby, right?

Then, he showed off his awesome skills at clapping.

Before we left, we stopped by my favorite spot for a few more pictures, and even though the light wasn't the best, Egan made the most of it and offered up a few cute pictures.

Ah, the arboretum. one of my favorite places, and it was only made better by my company. Thanks for the fun day, Blake and Egan and thanks for the membership, mom and dad! We can't wait to go back!

Just like daddy taught him

As an infrequent writer of this blog, Whitney felt it necessary to let you know this is Blake. I just got home from a kind of a long day of work. Kind of long, but a lot of fun. We had a concert tonight up at church, and while it was great, it was even better to get home.

Anyhow, my lovely wife greeted me with this little gem of a video. I would describe it, but I feel it is pretty self explanatory. This clip was not edited any way, other than shortening it a bit. Please to enjoy, and remember future Egan, when you see this and laugh, it is you you are laughing at.

growing up!

Egan has been doing a little (or a lot in my opinion) of growing up lately.
Just yesterday his second tooth broke through! It was also just yesterday that I heard him "crunch" a cheerio. He's using those teeth! He's loving feeding himself and we do quite a few meals of mostly finger foods. Egan has also learned the difference between yogurt melts and cheerios. I don't want him to eat a lot of the yogurt melts as they are basically like candy, but a few here and there keep his attention, so I've been mixing a few yogurt melts in with the cheerios. It has worked like a charm till today when I noticed him picking out all the yogurt melts first and then eating the cheerios. Game is up!
My favorite development is this...

He has decided he can hold his own bottle! I've been trying to convince him of this the last few weeks but he has REFUSED and thrown quite a few fits over it. I say convince because I've seen him pick up a sippy cup and drink from it, but he likes to be served his bottle. I, on the other hand, just wanted him to be able to hold his bottle so that if I need to feed him on the go, I can much easier. I love the time we have snuggling on the couch feeding him, and I'm sure that time will come to an end much too quickly, so I'm really cherishing these moments. He can now hold his own bottle. Yay Egan!
Egan is also doing a much better job at letting me walk out of the room for small amount of time without melting down. I'm not saying he will always let me go to the bathroom without screaming for me, but it is getting better.

He's also following us around the house more which is kind of nice to not have to carry him. This also means that he is chasing Bo more. If Bo is in a good mood, he likes it. I can just see Egan and Bo doing laps through the living room, hall, kitchen, and back to the living room.... over and over.

How cute is he in that diaper? He was wearing pants earlier, but after his last diaper change, I didn't think it was worth the fight to get them back on him.
Thanks Egan for the fun!

what having a kid looks like.

Don't get me wrong, Egan is more fun than I ever could have imagined. I love each and every day I get to spend with that cute kid. However, what I don't enjoy is what happens to the bathroom mirror.

This mirror happens to be right above his changing pad and he LOVES to wipe his little grubby hands all over it. I know I'll look back at this and smile, but for the time being, I'd just like to have a clean mirror!

Bo, Egan, and the duck

Remember WAY back when (2007) I posted this with Bo and a duck? Ok, seriously. No one was reading our blog back in 2007. The duck did make an appearance then though, and it makes another one today.
Bo loves his duck (and his hotdog, and his hamburger, and his monkey...) I think Egan is learning that Bo will pay attention to him if he has one of Bo's toys. What can I say, he's a smart kid!
(The video is a bit long, but enjoy anyway.)

Some notes...
1. Just now as I was testing the video, bo heard the duck and couldn't figure out where it was coming from.
2. The last scene has nothing to do with the duck, but I love Egan's reaction (or lack there of) is funny.
2. That heater you see in the last scene really kept our house warm when our heater wasn't working. When I took this video, the heater was working as seen by Egan's short sleeves and lack of socks. (And yes, I am well aware that heater is NOT child friendly. Egan got nowhere close to it when it was on, but thanks for your concern.)

new year, new header

Check out Egan's new picture up top! And that tooth!
I love the personality that comes out in this picture. This is TRULY Egan right now... spunky and fun.

bath time with a cutie

The other night as Blake was giving Egan a bath, I could hear them in there playing and having lots of fun, so I thought I'd join in for the fun and snap a few pictures.

I don't think I've mentioned before how much Egan loves his bath. Oh wait, maybe I have. He does love it.

He loves his lizard towel too!

some trivia

What do Blake and Whitney have in common with George W. Bush?

I'll tell you, but you are going to have to read through this to get to the answer.
Friday night we had a date night. We went to Houston's (with the giftcard Watermark gave to Blake for Christmas. LOVE IT!) and then to see Avatar. When we sat down at Houston's, Blake said, "I'm not totally sure... ok, I'm about 85% sure that Emmitt Smith is sitting behind you.
It was.
Blake wouldn't take a picture, so you are just going to have to take my word for it.
We also saw 2 other couples from Watermark. We felt like regulars at a place we'd never been. The food was good and we had tons of fun.
Following dinner, we browsed Barnes and Noble for a few minutes and then went on to the movie. We saw Avatar in 3D. I would like to end this part of the story with, "it was good", but I got sick with an hour left in the movie. That was the longest hour of my life. I finally had to get up and go get some water. FYI - That movie is 2.5 hours. 3D movies... no thank you.
At least I enjoyed the company!
Back to the story. Saturday night we were watching the Cowboy's game and all of a sudden, there was Emmitt Smith... sitting next to the former president.
There you go. What do we have in common with the President? This weekend we both sat by Emmitt Smith.

real life

very real.

And yes, I pulled all this out from under my couch the other day. Can you believe that? Is it everyone in the house against me in the war to keep the under couch clean? It looks to me like the main culprit is a certain cute little boy. Thanks Egan. Oh, and I won't mention that one time I caught Blake pushing stuff under the couch while cleaning up... that was months ago. I guess Egan comes by it honestly. Love you boys!

9 months?!?

Dear Egan, I simply cannot believe you are nine months old already. You become more fun daily. This month was a big month! You celebrated your first Christmas! Christmas is way more fun when there's a sweet little boy to spend it with. You are crawling like a mad man all over the house and still love to stand any time you can. You are now cruising along the sofa and love to push some of your new toys along as you WALK! Yes, you can walk while pushing a toy along! You also still love to chase Bo around the house. You love it even more when we hold you and help you chase Bo around the house. He likes it too. He gets one of his favorite toys to play with and enjoys the chase.
Our heater went out last week which wasn't the most fun thing ever. You were such a champ sleeping wherever we happened to stay. I still don't know how we were blessed with such a great sleeper. Our heater is now fixed, and you are finally back to sleeping in your own bed after being in a pack 'n play for a long time. Yay!
Another new thing... you have a tooth! Last Thursday I noticed that it had almost broken though, and it finally did break through this weekend. You are super close to cutting one more. Let me tell you, teething is NOT FUN. You have been so sad this week. We have done what we can to help you with the pain, but you just haven't been yourself. I guess it is good though because we don't want you to live toothless forever!
You are still a great eater and have really started doing a great job of feeding yourself. I think that is cute and you are so proud of yourself when you get food in your mouth all by yourself.
You smile a lot. It melts my heart. I love that you smile in response to my smiles. You are one smiley boy!
One not so fun thing is you don't like to be left alone without mom or dad. That makes the Church nursery a bit hard, but that is something you are going to have to learn to love. Sorry, baby! You also don't like to be left in a room alone. I think you are still learning that you can actually follow us and you are starting to do that more. I think that will help with your frustration level a lot.
As I type this you are taking an awesome nap. We spent the morning at the doctor for your 9 month checkup and then went to playgroup. You are beat! At the doctor you weighed in at 18lbs 10oz. That is a pound less than last month's weigh in, but since last month wasn't an official weigh in, you had clothes on and a cloth diaper. Today you just had a disposable diaper on. They weigh quite a bit less. You have slowed down your growth a lot here recently since you are moving so much. Ok, you are moving CONSTANTLY.
Lastly, your hair has really thickened up and started getting longer. It really makes you look more and more like a little boy and not a baby. Your dad had fun the other night giving you a mohawk. He thought that was pretty cool, and I think you did too.

Egan, we love you and are loving watching you grow up into a fun, happy little boy.
I love you,

Here's another little picture that I think really shows life around here.

Egan with his styling hairdo. Mom with the camera. Dad with his iphone taking pictures, and Egan giving me a look like "Gosh mom, enough already." I love this kid.

Christmas Eve and Christmas morning plus a little catch up

Phew, what a week it has been. Where have we been? Well, we went to see both sides of our family for Christmas, and then hoped for a quiet week at home while Blake had some time off from work. We have had anything but that this last week. Monday we had fun going shopping and spending some of our Christmas money including Egan's snazzy new big boy car seat. He is riding in style now! Monday evening after Egan went to bed, I noticed that it was getting colder and colder in the house. Blake took a look at the heater, and it had some sort of error light signaling, so we got a few space heaters set up in our bedrooms and slept fine. Tuesday, a repairman came over to take a look at the heater and it was decided that parts would have to be ordered... fun times. We spent a few nights with some of our Watermark family so that we wouldn't have to be in a cold house, but finally decided that it wasn't that cold after all, so home we came. We got another heater, sealed off Egan's room as well as the guest bedroom, and have been staying warm since then. Not to worry, Egan hasn't been freezing. He's just been sleeping in our bedroom. Our heater still isn't fixed, but life is always an adventure, isn't it? So, that's a quick update with where we have been, now back to where I left off after Christmas.
Egan's first Christmas was a blast! We got snow on Christmas Eve which meant Egan's first Christmas was a white one! Fun!
Here's a picture of the snow coming down.
Egan playing in the presents and can't wait till he gets to open them tomorrow!
Bo was NOT a fan of the snow.
but I had fun taking some pictures in it!
Christmas Eve is a busy day for Blake. This year, there were 4 Christmas Eve services plus rehearsal. Egan and I had a fun morning at home, and then went to the early service at church. Later in the afternoon we went over to the Howell family's house and had a fun christmas Eve dinner with 9 kids and 10 adults before all the dads headed back to the church for the 11pm service. It was fun!
We spent Christmas morning at home with just our little family.
Egan had fun playing with daddy and has been pushing this little table around. He's that close to walking... I can't believe it!
We didn't go overboard with gifts for Egan this year. In fact, we didn't buy him any toys because we figured he'd get enough from everyone else. (He did.) We did, however get him a few things he needed. If you know me, it was more for the photo op than anything as he couldn't care less about gifts. Here's his one.
That photo was by Blake. Great job, honey!
Before we opened gifts, we lit a roaring fire.
Or maybe we just turned the TV to the "Yule Log" channel.
When it finally came time to open presents, Egan wasn't too excited as can be seen here.
but that didn't last long.
IMG_0993 (1).jpg
I helped him open his present from us and in true Christmas morning fashion, we are all in pjs so, please excuse that moving forward.
(Aparently, the top half of my face isn't that important to Blake. Just kidding. He did a great job.)
Check out Egan's cool new shoes!
Blake helped Egan open his stocking (while Bo oversaw what all was going on.)
He got some really cool bowls that stick to his highchair. Lucky kid, right?
Just me admiring my cute boys...
Blake got some really cool stuff, but the best was this mug.
After all the fun inside, we went outside to enjoy the snow a bit!
Well, Bo didn't enjoy the snow, but he was out there.
It was a fun Christmas morning with my sweet boys! It is hard to believe how much life has changed since last year, but I wouldn't have it any other way. More to come with Christmas with our extended families, but Egan just woke up from a nap, so back to work for me!
